The Mountain-Shelter “Albergo Ghiacciaio dei Forni,” was built in 1896 by Rinaldo Buzzi, who wanted to create a hotel structure at a high altitude, where true mountain lovers could find comfortable accommodation.
During the years of the First World War the Mountain-Shelter was used as a military barracks by the alpine troops who were fighting on the mountains surrounding the Ortler-Cevedale Range. At a later date it was restored and turned into a mountain shelter becoming an important arrival and departure base for nature trails, and also for historic and ethnographic excursions due to the presence of the trenches and passageways of the White War in the vicinity.
